Take a break: Sharpen the Saw

Sometimes, especially in the summer, we just need a break. This little post today is inspired by Stephen Covey’s book The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. The seventh habit in this book is a call for us to “sharpen the saw”.

What does Sharpen the Saw mean?

Covey starts the chapter on this topic with a story of a man cutting down a tree. The man is exhausted – and has been sawing for hours. If he only took a break to sharpen his saw, the tree would be cut down more quickly and with less effort.

So, sharpening the saw means taking quality time for oneself. In Covey’s words, sharpening the saw is “preserving and enhancing the greatest asset you have – you.”

Why should we Sharpen the Saw ?

Covey argues that taking an intentional, purposeful break influences all aspects of our effectiveness. By taking a break, we are giving ourselves more opportunity to grow and develop.

So, take a break this weekend for some intentional relaxation. I’ll end the post with a quote from the book:

“We are the instruments of our own performance, and to be effective, we need to recognize the importance of taking time regularly to sharpen the saw.”

How will you Sharpen the Saw ?
